UPDATE: Michael Sam on the cover of Sports Illustrated
Michael Sam, a defensive lineman from Missouri, is likely to be the first openly gay athlete in the NFL after it was made public on Sunday in an artile in the NY Times.
Sam is no ordinary player. He's 6 foot 2, 260 pounds. He led Missouri to a 11-2 record last season and a Cotton Bowl win. He was named a first team All-American. He was the defensive player of the year in the SEC.He was voted Missouri's MVP by his teammates. He is likely to be a fairly high pick in the upcoming NFL Draft.
Why did he wait until now to come out as openly gay? 'No one asked,' he said.
His Missouri teammates and coaches knew for the entire season.
An SI article that talked to some NFL execs about Sam's coming out sad that it will affect his draft stock because of the distraction
