UPDATE: Michael Sam on the cover of Sports Illustrated

Michael Sam, a defensive lineman from Missouri, is likely to be the first openly gay athlete in the NFL after it was made public on Sunday in an artile in the NY Times

Sam is no ordinary player. He's 6 foot 2, 260 pounds. He led Missouri to a 11-2 record last season and a Cotton Bowl win. He was named a first team All-American. He was the defensive player of the year in the SEC.He was voted Missouri's MVP by his teammates. He is likely to be a fairly high pick in the upcoming NFL Draft.

Why did he wait until now to come out as openly gay? 'No one asked,' he said.

His Missouri teammates and coaches knew for the entire season.

One day, athletes coming out as gay in major pro sports won't even be a big deal and will just be normal...maybe after Sam and others in the NBA, NHL, MLB follow, we'll be a lot closer to that day.

Patrick Clayton was the first play on twitter to speak out about the Michael Sam situation.

Instead of stopping...breaking his phone.. or just walking away

He then went on to defend his 'Oh wow!!! There goes the NFL' tweet
