The Yankees were supposed to be in a little rebuilding phase but have started out the season winning so it looks like they might actually be contenders this season.
The Pirates are not off to the hottest start this season and Cole only being under contract with the team until 2019 where he will likely make the jump to another team and a huge new contract is the main reason why the New York media thinks that Cole will be one of the Yankees top trade targets.
