Penguins Finalize 23-Man Roster

GM Jim Rutherford announced Tuesday evening that the team has finalized their 23-man roster.

The Penguins' regular season kicks off this Thursday, October 3 by hosting the Buffalo Sabres at 7:00 PM at PPG Paints Arena. All games can be heard on 105.9 The X or ESPN PGH.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have finalized their 23-man roster, it was announced today by executive vice president and general manager Jim Rutherford.

Pittsburgh’s current 23-man roster includes 13 forwards (Zach Aston-Reese, Nick Bjugstad, Teddy Blueger, Sidney Crosby, Alex Galchenyuk, Jake Guentzel, Patric Hornqvist, Dominik Kahun, Evgeni Malkin, Jared McCann, Bryan Rust, Dominik Simon and Brandon Tanev), eight defensemen (Brian Dumoulin, Erik Gudbranson, Jack Johnson, Kris Letang, Marcus Pettersson, Juuso Riikola, Chad Ruhwedel and Justin Schultz) and two goaltenders (Tristan Jarry and Matt Murray). Twenty of the 23 players skated for the Penguins last year. They are joined by newcomers Alex Galchenyuk (trade with Arizona), Dominik Kahun (trade with Chicago) and Brandon Tanev (free agency). Defenseman John Marino and goaltender Casey DeSmith have been re-assigned to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League. 

Zach Trotman has been placed on long-term injured reserve following sports hernia surgery last week. Bryan Rust will be also placed on long-term injured reserve after the 23-man roster is submitted.

For the third-consecutive season, captain Sidney Crosby is the Penguins’ longest-tenured player as he embarks on his 15th campaign. Only Penguins’ Hall of Fame owner Mario Lemieux (17 seasons) has played more seasons in franchise history. He will be joined by alternate captains Evgeni Malkin (14th year) and Kris Letang (13th year) as the only three-time Stanley Cup Champions on the team (2009, ’16, ’17).
