CMU Won't Participate in Intercollegiate Sports This Fall

The Carnegie Mellon Athletics Department announced on Wednesday that the university would not participate in intercollegiate athletics competition this coming fall.

“Over the past few months, we have explored every possible avenue for a safe return to play,” said Director of Athletics Josh Centor in an e-mail message to Carnegie Mellon student-athletes. “In the message that I wrote to you last month, I noted that the health and safety of our students, staff and community members are at the forefront of every decision we make. With that as our guiding principle, we cannot appropriately return to sport at this time.”

The sports impacted include:

  • men’s and women’s cross country
  • men’s and women’s golf
  • men’s and women’s soccer
  • men’s and women’s tennis
  • football and volleyball

Participation in Winter and Spring sports is still undetermined. Their Return to Play Task Force will continue to meet and plan for the future seasons.
