12-Year-Old Arrested In Connection With 4 Armed Carjackings Within One Hour

Authorities in Washington, D.C., arrested a 12-year-old boy in connection with a series of armed carjackings that all happened in under one hour. The first carjacking was reported at 6:29 p.m. on Thursday (March 4).

The two suspects went up to a person sitting in their vehicle and brandished a gun, telling them to exit their car. The victim refused to comply and fled the scene. At 7:15 p.m., the pair tried again, approaching another person sitting in their car a few blocks away. They also refused to comply with the demands and sped away.

Five minutes later, the 12-year-old and his accomplice demanded the keys from a third individual, who was walking to his car. One of the suspects started rummaging through his backseat and stole a bag with a laptop before running off.

After their third attempt to steal a car ended in failure, the duo tried one more time. This time, they were successful, and the driver exited her vehicle. The two suspects drove away, and one of them was apprehended a short time later.

“At approximately 7:24 p.m., the suspects approached the [last] victim, who was seated in their vehicle, in the 1000 block of Evarts Street, Northeast,” the Metropolitan Police Department said in a statement. “One of the suspects brandished a handgun and demanded the victim exit her vehicle. The victim complied, and the suspects fled the scene in the victim’s vehicle. One of the suspects was apprehended a short time later. The victim’s vehicle was recovered.”

Authorities said the 12-year-old boy was taken into custody, but his accomplice remains on the run. The young boy was charged with four counts of armed carjacking. The case remains under investigation, and a $10,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest of the second suspect.
