Mishel Prada Explains Importance of Barrier-Breaking Series ‘Vida’

To play Latinx character Emma on Starz’s Vida has been an honor for actress Mishel Prada. Mishel stopped by On Air With Ryan Seacrest on Wednesday, June 12, and shared why she believes the series, which has been picked up for season 3, resonates with so many viewers.

“It’s been such an honor to bring a character like this to light,” Mishel told Ryan Seacrest of Emma, who is struggling with the untimely death of her mother, who she never made peace with after coming out. “It’s not everyday we get to really see such fully fleshed-out women and … just really get to be human beings on screen.”

The series, which revolves ultimately around two Mexican-American siblings from East Los Angeles, has similarly resonated with millions of viewers for the same reasons.

“I think what’s revolutionary about it is the fact that were seeing these brown bodies and seeing these neighborhoods getting painted in this way, but what’s revolutionary [really] is how normal it is, you know?” Mishel continued. “You’re like, ‘Oh, there’s those neighborhoods in East LA and it’s gangs, it’s drugs, it’s this’ and then you actually get invited into the living rooms the way our show does and you’re like, ‘Oh, yeah, actually, yeah, I also sometimes cry myself to sleep because I’m not really sure about my life.’ Or, you know, have like family issues or what not so I think that’s a big part that really makes people [feel connected].”

At the end of the day, the series portrays that universally we’re all the same and human, On Air With Ryan Seacrest's Patty Rodriguez added.

“I didn’t realize I needed it until I was on set and looking around with all of these women and all of the fun we had making it,” Mishel concluded. “I was like, ‘Oh, wow.’ I didn’t even realize I was missing this in my life until I had it.”
