Sesame Street Helps Kids With Autism Be More Comfortable Wearing Masks

"Sesame Street" 40th Anniversary Temporary Street Renaming

If you, like me, have kids, and have a hard time getting them to wear their masks in public, then you're definitely not alone. A lot of young kids have a hard time understanding the need and importance of masks, and parents are having to work harder to get them comfortable with wearing them.

And for some kids who are on the autism spectrum, have learning disabilities or behavioral disorders, it can be even harder for their parents to get them to regularly wear their masks - and be comfortable doing so - while out in public.

So who else to help kids of all ages and abilities feel more comfortable and excited to wear their mask during the coronavirus pandemic? None other than Sesame Street, of course!

In a video released by Sesame Street, we see Julia, a 4-year-old muppet with autism, on a video call with her dad, talking about being excited to go to the park. Then, her dad reminds her to wear a mask at the park, and Julia becomes upset because she doesn't want to wear a mask, explaining that is bothers her ears and tickles her nose.

The video then shows how Julia's dad talks to her about how wearing a mask is like so many other things in life - they get easier the more you practice. The father/daughter duo practice wearing their masks together and even put one on Julia's stuffed bunny.

Check out the video if you think this is something that will help your own child become more comfortable with this new normal in our daily lives:

This video is actually just one of a larger collection that will be released by Sesame Street which is all about helping kids through every difficult and confusing changes that have come with the pandemic.

Thank you, Sesame Street for working to make this time a little less complicated for our kids! That mask video is such a great start, and I can't wait to see what else they come up with.
