Time to take a trip dahn memory lane. About 10 years ago throughout the Steelers season, I would sneak into the Steelers South Side facility and into the locker room after practices to do these silly little 5 question interviews with the players. Actual journalists would be in the same room trying to get sound bites for their stories, meanwhile I'm there asking James Harrison what his favorite Halloween candy is. I know, hard hitting journalism at it's finest. I am eternally grateful to the players that embraced me and my foolishness. Hopefully it brought a little relief to be asked something silly instead of, "why didn't you catch that ball".
It took a few visits to the locker room for me to build up the courage to talk to Ben Roethlisberger. We had met a handful of times, I knew that he knew me but talking to Ben always made me a little nervous. Come on...he's a future hall of famer! Ben is kind of a big deal. I didn't always see him in the locker room but on this day I nervously walked up to say hi. Ben couldn't have been nicer and agreed to take part in my dumb interview. I tested out his Pittsburghese and asked him which Full House guardian he would allow to babysit his son. After that day, anytime Ben saw me in the locker room he would walk by and exclaim, "It's the Tall Cathys!" Cathys...plural. It always brought a smile to my face.
Ben, thank you for the memories and for always being so kind throughout the years. Enjoy that retirement and time with your family!
